Women’s Soccer: Porter’s Heroics Lift Macalester Past St. Thomas, 1-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senior midfielder Kelsey Porter (St. Paul, Minn./Roseville) scored with just nine seconds left in regulation to give the Macalester College women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over St. Thomas in a MIAC game Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The Scots are now 4-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in league play, while the Tommies fall to 7-2-1, 3-2 MIAC.

After a scoreless first half that saw St. Thomas take nine shots compared to one for Macalester, the Scots began creating some chances in the second half. With time running down and overtime likely, first year forward Kate Bond (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) earned a corner kick to the right of the Tommies' goal. She hurriedly took the corner kick and sent the ball into the penalty area, where Porter stepped into a shot that went into the right side of the goal to beat the clock and St. Thomas. It was the first goal of the season for Porter, who missed all of 2016 with an injury.

Macalester ended up with an 8-6 advantage in shots for the second half. Senior goalkeeper Rachel Wilson-King (Tucson, Ariz./St. Gregory College Prep School) registered eight saves for her third shutout of the season, while Olivia Elvidge had two saves for the Tommies.

The Scots host Carleton College on Wednesday, Oct. 4 in a MIAC contest originally scheduled for Sept. 22. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
