WAVERLY, Iowa – The Macalester College women's soccer team began the 2017 season with a 2-0 loss to Wartburg College Friday afternoon at the Wartburg Soccer Field. The Scots were 9-5-3 a year ago, while the Knights were 10-5-4 in 2016.
Wartburg opened the scoring in the 10th minute, when Morgan Neuendorf found the net for a 1-0 lead. Alyssa Christopher made it 2-0 with a goal in the 13th minute. That's all the offense the Knights would need, as goalkeeper Beth Crow made five saves for the shutout. First year
Kate Bond (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) and sophomore
Elizabeth Han (Seattle, Wash./Nathan Hale) each put two shots on goal for the Scots.
Senior goalkeepers
Emma Toomer (Leesburg, Va./Loudon County) and
Rachel Wilson-King (Tucson, Ariz./St. Gregory College Prep School) split time in goal, with Toomer making seven saves in the first half and Wilson-King recording five saves in the second half.
Macalester hosts UW-Eau Claire in the first home game of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 5, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
