WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Macalester College water polo team closed out regional play with a 12-5 victory over Utica College Sunday afternoon at Washington & Jefferson College. The Scots are now 14-6 overall on the season.
Macalester took control quickly, as five different players scored in the first quarter for a 5-0 advantage. The Scots kept Utica off the scoreboard in the second quarter as well while scoring four more goals for a 9-0 lead at the half. The two teams each found the net three times in the third quarter, with Utica netting two goals in the final period.
First years
Cara Mullery (Palmetto Bay, Fla./MAST Academy) and
Oriana Galasso (Gresham, Ore.) led the way with three goals apiece, while first year
Naomi Strait (Beaverton, Ore.) scored twice. Senior
Liz Kelleher (Oakland, Calif./Piedmont), sophomores
Natalie Hoffman (Seattle, Wash./Inglemoor) and
Lucille Moran (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), and first year
Jenny Granston (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) also tallied goals.
With their four victories over the weekend, the Scots have clinched the No. 2 seed at the CWPA Championships, which will be held Apr. 22-23 at Macalester's Riley Pool.
