WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Macalester College water polo team won two regional matches on Saturday, defeating host Washington & Jefferson College and Grove City College to move to 3-0 on the weekend. The Scots improve to 13-6 on the season with the victories.
Against the Presidents, who are ranked ninth in the latest Division III poll, Macalester erased a 1-0 deficit with three straight goals for a 3-1 lead. The Scots never let Washington & Jefferson get closer than within a goal, as Macalester led by as many as three goals before taking an 8-6 victory. The win is the program's first over Washington & Jefferson.
First year
Cara Mullery (Palmetto Bay, Fla./MAST Academy) scored a team-best four goals, while sophomore
Lucille Moran (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) had three goals and first year
Oriana Galasso (Gresham, Ore.) scored once. Sophomore goalkeeper
Courtney Overland (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) registered 12 saves in the win, including five in the fourth quarter.
In the second game of the day, Macalester led 5-1 at the half before tallying four goals in the third quarter for a commanding 9-2 advantage. Galasso closed out the scoring with two goals in the fourth quarter, giving her six for the match. Moran ended up with three goals, and Mullery scored twice in the 11-2 victory. Overland notched nine saves in goal.
