Baseball: Macalester’s Cole Chang Tosses No-Hitter Against Augsburg

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Sophomore right-hander Cole Chang (Pleasantville, N.Y./Collegiate School) threw a seven-inning no-hitter as the Macalester College baseball team took two from Augsburg College in a MIAC doubleheader Friday afternoon at Nicholson Field. The Scots, who won 5-0 and 22-1, are now 14-8 overall and 4-2 in the conference, while the Auggies drop to 13-13, 1-5 MIAC.

In the top of the seventh, Chang recorded a strikeout before hitting Jack Duffy for the third time in the game. After a flyout to left, Walker Rogers hit a grounder up the middle that was snared by senior second baseman Quentin Stuart (Nashville, Ind./Nashville), who stepped on second for the final out. Chang faced 26 batters, with one walk and four hit-batsmen. He recorded 12 fly-ball outs and six groundouts while striking out three in seven innings. Chang's no-hitter is the first in head coach Matt Parrington's 21-year career at Macalester.

Junior Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, while junior Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) delivered a solo home run in the third. First year Carl Francalangia (West Hartford, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) singled home junior Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) in the second, and junior Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) hit a sacrifice fly that plated Francalangia in the fifth. Castagnetti and Francalangia each had two hits in Game 1.

The Scots' bats exploded in Game 2, racking up 22 runs on 22 hits, including 12 runs on nine hits in the fifth inning. McMullen and Stuart homered in the fifth, while sophomore Sam Goldberg (N. Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) hit his first collegiate home run in the bottom of the sixth. Baretta, Stuart and sophomore Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) each had three hits, while Abelson and McMullen drove in four runs apiece.

Not to be overlooked was a strong pitching performance by senior Dylan Edwards-Gaherty (New York, N.Y./American Studies), who pitched four scoreless innings with three hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Chang, who threw just 78 pitches in his no-hitter, started the second game and allowed one run on four hits in two innings.

Macalester returns to action on Tuesday, Apr. 11 with a MIAC twinbill at Carleton College. The first game starts at 2:30 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
