NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Macalester College baseball team bounced back from a 1-0 loss with a 12-0 victory in a MIAC doubleheader at Carleton College Tuesday afternoon at Mel Taube Field. The Scots are now 15-9 overall and 5-3 in the conference, while the Knights end the day 8-15, 1-5 MIAC.
Macalester ran into a tough pitcher in the first game, as Austin Heuer tossed a seven-inning shutout, giving up two hits and one walk while striking out eight. The only run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI double by Wilson Battle. First year pitcher
Matthew Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga./Pace Academy) was almost as stingy as Heuer, allowing one unearned run on four hits while striking out two without a walk in six innings of work. Juniors
Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and
Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) recorded the hits for the Scots.
Macalester wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard in Game 2, as McMullen hit a three-run homer in the top of the first inning. Still in the first, sophomore
Sam Goldberg (N. Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) delivered a two-run triple to put the Scots ahead, 5-0. Junior
Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) doubled home sophomore
Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) in the fifth, and senior
Quentin Stuart (Nashville, Ind./Nashville) came home on an error in the sixth for a 7-0 lead. Macalester pushed five more runs across in the top of the ninth, with seniors
Peter Bertel (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) and
Alex Dash (New York, N.Y./Columbia Grammar and Prep), junior
Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and sophomore
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) driving in runs.
Senior pitcher
Dylan Edwards-Gaherty (New York, N.Y./American Studies) did not require the offensive outburst, as he blanked Carleton on four hits while striking out eight and walking two in seven strong innings. Senior
Anson Justi (Columbia, Md./McDonogh School) and junior
Sean O'Brien (Potomac, Md./Landon School) each pitched scoreless innings without giving up a hit.
Macalester hosts the University of St. Thomas in another MIAC twinbill on Saturday, Apr. 15. The first game starts at 1:00 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
