ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College water polo team defeated Washington & Jefferson College, 10-9 in overtime to capture the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championship, hosted by Macalester at Riley Pool Sunday afternoon. The Scots end their season with a record of 17-6, the program's most wins since the 2009 squad went 17-15. The Presidents finish their season 17-5.

Cara Mullery (Palmetto Bay, Fla./MAST Academy) scored goals in the first quarter to give Macalester a 2-0 lead. Sophomore
Lucille Moran (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) answered a W&J goal in the second quarter to make the halftime score 3-1 Scots. After both teams scored twice in the third quarter, the Presidents quickly tied the score at 5-5 in the fourth with two goals.

Natalie Hoffman (Seattle, Wash./Inglemoor) briefly put the Scots ahead, 6-5. But back-to-back goals by Washington & Jefferson gave the visitors their first lead of the game, 7-6 with a minute to play. Moran's third goal of the game with 49 seconds left tied the score at 7-7, and neither team found the net before the end of regulation.
In the first of two three-minute overtime periods, the teams exchanged goals twice, with the Presidents netting the tying goal with seven seconds left in the period to make the score 9-9. With time winding down in the second overtime period and another overtime looming, Moran scored the go-ahead goal with 18 seconds on the clock. Macalester held on defense to clinch the win and the championship.
Moran led the Scots with five goals, giving her 14 for the tournament. Mullery and Hoffman scored twice, while Finney scored once. Sophomore goalie
Courtney Overland (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) made 14 saves to preserve the win. The team celebrated the victory with a team swim, including the coaches, as the Macalester fans, who were loud and supportive throughout the tournament, cheered with approval.

Scott Reed, improved by 13 wins over last year's 4-20 campaign. The Scots came in as the league's second seed behind Washington & Jefferson after posting a 12-2 record against conference opponents.
