Water Polo: Macalester Advances to CWPA Championship Game

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College water polo team won twice on Saturday to advance to the championship game at the CWPA Division III Championships, hosted by Macalester at Riley Pool. The Scots (16-6) defeated Grove City College, 11-3 in the quarterfinals and beat Carthage College, 10-2 in the semifinals to extend their winning streak to eight games.

In the win over Grove City, Macalester scored four goals in the first quarter and two in the second to take a 6-2 lead at the half. Sophomore Lucille Moran (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), who was named the CWPA Division III Player of the Year earlier this week, tallied three of Macalester's goals in the half. Moran and first year Cara Mullery (Palmetto Bay, Fla./MAST Academy) found the net in the third quarter to put the Scots ahead, 8-2 after three. The Scots outscored Grove City, 3-1 in the final period for an 11-3 victory.

Moran finished with five goals, while Mullery had three goals and first year Oriana Galasso (Gresham, Ore.) had two goals. Sophomore Natalie Hoffman (Seattle, Wash./Inglemoor) also scored for Macalester. Sophomore goalie Courtney Overland (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) registered 13 saves in goal.

Overland stood out again in the victory over third-seeded Carthage, making 16 saves in the 10-2 win. The Scots started slowly with one goal in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Mullery scored three of Macalester's four goals in the period to grab a 5-2 halftime lead. Overland and the Scots' defense kept Carthage off the scoreboard in the second half, with Moran scoring three times and Mullery and Galasso adding a goal apiece to wrap up the win.

Moran and Mullery each finished with four goals, while Galasso and Hoffman added a goal apiece.

The Scots will face top-seeded Washington & Jefferson College in the finals of the CWPA Championships on Sunday, Apr. 23 at Riley Pool. The Presidents defeated Utica and Connecticut College to advance to the championship game. The game starts at 1:00 p.m.
