NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Macalester College water polo team closed out the CWPA Regional Tournament with a pair of victories Sunday at Connecticut College. The Scots (10-6) wrap up the tournament with a 5-2 record over the weekend.
Against Monmouth, Macalester scored the game's first three goals in taking a 6-1 halftime lead. The Scots outscored Monmouth, 4-0 the rest of the way to cruise to a 10-1 victory. Sophomore
Lucille Moran (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and first years
Oriana Galasso (Gresham, Ore.) and
Cara Mullery (Palmetto Bay, Fla./MAST Academy) each scored three goals, while junior
Brooke Finney (Grand Rapids, Mich./Jenison) added a goal in the first quarter.
The match with Penn St.-Behrend was much more competitive, with neither team leading by more than two goals. With Macalester up 6-4 late in the third quarter, the Lions scored twice, including a goal with 28 seconds left, to tie the match at 6-6. Moran tallied the go-ahead goal with 18 seconds remaining, but PSU-Behrend was awarded a penalty as time expired. The Lions converted the penalty shot, sending the match into overtime.
The teams exchanged goals in the first three-minute overtime period, then Mullery and Moran found the net in the second overtime to give the Scots the win. Moran had a huge weekend, scoring 29 goals in seven games.
