NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Macalester College water polo team opened play at the CWPA Regional Tournament with a 1-1 record Friday afternoon at Connecticut College. The Scots (6-5), ranked 10th in Division III, defeated Utica, 12-3 before falling to No. 9 Washington & Jefferson, 7-5 in overtime.
In the win over Utica, Macalester outscored the Pioneers, 7-0 in the first quarter to take control of the match. Sophomores
Natalie Hoffman (Seattle, Wash./Inglemoor) and
Lucille Moran (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), and first year
Cara Mullery (Palmetto Bay, Fla./MAST Academy) each scored twice in the quarter. Moran finished with five goals in the win, with Mullery scoring three goals and first years
Oriana Galasso (Gresham, Ore.) and
Jenny Granston (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) each scoring once.
Against Washington & Jefferson, the Scots took a 2-1 lead after the first quarter on goals by Moran and Mullery. The teams exchanged goals, with Moran scoring twice, before the Presidents tied the game at 4-4 with 1:20 left in the third quarter. Moran tallied her fourth goal of the game to put the Scots ahead with just under four minutes remaining in regulation. But Washington & Jefferson found the net with 2:25 to play to tie the score and send the game into overtime. After a scoreless extra session, the Presidents scored twice in the second overtime period to win, 7-5.
Macalester will take on Connecticut College and Grove City College on Saturday, Mar. 25, beginning at 9:20 a.m. Central.
