ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team dropped a MIAC game to visiting Carleton, 101-76 Saturday afternoon in the Leonard Center. The Scots fall to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in league play with the loss, while the Knights improve to 5-1, 3-0 MIAC.
The score remained close for most of the first half until Carleton took the lead late. After junior forward
Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) hit a three-pointer to make the score 28-25 Knights, Carleton closed out the half with a 20-14 run to take a 48-39 advantage at the break. Ferm scored 10 points and had four steals in the half, while Kent Hanson tallied 14 points and eight rebounds for the Knights.
A three from first year forward
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) and a basket by Ferm helped the Scots pull to within five, 49-44 early in the second half. But Carleton scored the next seven points, and Macalester never came closer than 10 points the rest of the way. The Scots forced 23 turnovers and scored 20 points off of those miscues. Macalester also hit 12 threes compared to eight for the Knights. Carleton dominated inside, holding a 51-27 advantage in rebounding and outscoring the Scots, 62-16 in the paint for the game.
Ferm finished with 14 points, four rebounds, four assists and five steals, as four Scots scored in double figures. Henningfield registered 11 points and a team-best seven rebounds, sophomore forward
Rob Newman (Westchester, N.Y./Rye Country Day) hit three three-pointers and had 10 points, and senior guard
Brett Olson (New London, Minn./New London-Spicer) also scored 10 points. First year guard
Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) delivered four assists to go with five points, a block and a steal.
Hanson led the Knights with 30 points and 11 rebounds, while Matthew Stritzel added 27 points and seven assists in the win.
Macalester returns to action with a pair of games in Iowa on Dec. 29-30. The Scots play Loras in Dubuque on Dec. 29 before taking on Coe in Cedar Rapids on Dec. 30.
