ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team earned a key MIAC victory with a 1-0 win over first-place Augsburg Tuesday night at Macalester Stadium. The Scots improve to 5-4-2 overall and 2-3-2 in the conference, while the Auggies fall to 8-3-1, 5-1-1 MIAC after suffering their first conference loss this year.
After a scoreless first half, a foul gave Macalester a free kick about 50 yards away from the Augsburg goal. Junior defender
Clara Webby (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) launched the free kick towards the Auggies' net, where senior forward
Jaime Hasama (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Peninsula) deflected the ball to sophomore midfielder
Elizabeth Han (Seattle, Wash./Nathan Hale). Han collected the ball about five yards out and scored in the 63rd minute for a 1-0 lead.
The Scots' defense played well all night and made the one-goal lead stand. Augsburg, which had scored 29 goals in its previous 11 games this season, held a slight 9-7 edge in shots but could not get one past senior goalkeeper
Rachel Wilson-King (Tucson, Ariz./St. Gregory College Prep School). Wilson-King made six saves to preserve the shutout, her fourth clean sheet of the season.
Macalester hits the road for a conference game at Bethel on Saturday, Oct. 14. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. in Arden Hills, Minn.
