ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team fell to MIAC foe Carleton in three sets, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23 Friday night in the Leonard Center. The Scots are now 6-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play, while the Knights improve to 11-3, 3-2 MIAC.
In the first set, Carleton hit .462 with 14 kills compared to 11 for Macalester en route to a 25-17 win. Senior middle hitter
Meghan Klapper (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) had three kills for the Scots in the set. The Knights controlled the second set, leading by as many as seven points while holding Macalester to 10 kills and a .044 hitting percentage.
The Scots fought back in the third set, eventually building a 23-19 edge after getting kills by Klapper and first year right side
Grace Brickner (Bronx, N.Y./Fieldston), and an ace from first year
Hannah Detlaff (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire). But a pair of Macalester attack errors and four consecutive kills gave Carleton a comeback 25-23 win for the set and the sweep.
Klapper finished with a team-best eight kills and a .538 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter
Clara Baumann (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East) had seven kills and seven digs, while senior
Brooke Hunter (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) tallied five kills, 15 assists and seven digs. Senior setter
Samantha Bongiorno (Dallas, Texas/Shelton) split the setting duties with Hunter and had 13 assists. Defensively, first year
Alexis Foret (Copperas Cove, Texas/Copperas) recorded 12 digs. Carleton was led by Lucy Stevens with 10 kills.
Macalester hosts Martin Luther College in a non-conference match on Monday, Oct. 3. The first serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
