ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team earned a non-conference victory with a win over Martin Luther College, 25-23, 21-25, 25-15, 25-20 Monday evening in the Leonard Center. The Scots improve to 7-9 overall with the win, while the Knights drop to 8-12.
In a close first set, Macalester held a 23-20 edge before MLC tallied three straight points to tie the score. Seniors
Samantha Bongiorno (Dallas, Texas/Shelton) and
Brooke Hunter (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) answered for the Scots with kills to take a 25-23 win. Hunter, junior outside hitter
India Medaris (Napa, Calif./Justin Siena) and first year right side
Grace Brickner (Bronx, N.Y./Fieldston) each had three kills in the set.
After falling in the second set, 25-21 despite five kills from junior outside hitter
Clara Baumann (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East), Macalester regrouped and took a commanding 25-15 win in the third set. Baumann led the way with four kills. Then in the fourth set, the Knights battled back to tie the score at 18-18. But kills by senior middle hitters
Meghan Klapper (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) and
Caitlyn O'Neil (Carmichael, Calif./Rio Americano), followed by a kill by Medaris on match point, helped the Scots score seven of the final nine points to take the set and the match.
Baumann finished with a team-high 13 kills to go with 11 digs, while Hunter also had a double-double with 11 kills and 19 assists. Medaris finished with 10 kills, a .391 hitting percentage and eight digs, with O'Neil delivering six kills without an error in 14 attempts. Bongiorno dished out 25 assists and notched 10 digs to give Macalester three players with a double-double. First year
Alexis Foret (Copperas Cove, Texas/Copperas) paced the defense with 20 digs. Jade St. Germaine led the Knights with 18 kills.
Macalester returns to MIAC play with a match at Augsburg College on Wednesday, Oct. 5. The match starts at 7:00 p.m. in Minneapolis, Minn.
