MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team lost to MIAC leader Augsburg in four sets, 22-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-20 Wednesday night at Augsburg. The defeat drops the Scots to 7-10 overall and 1-4 in league play, while the Auggies (11-6) remain unbeaten in the MIAC with a 5-0 record.
In the first set, Macalester held Augsburg to a .044 hitting percentage while getting three kills from senior middle hitter
Caitlyn O'Neil (Carmichael, Calif./Rio Americano) in a 25-22 win. The Auggies answered by winning the next two sets handily, 25-16 and 25-15 to lead 2-1 in the match. The fourth set was close, with Augsburg breaking an 11-11 tie with four straight points. Macalester came within three, 21-18 before the Auggies closed out the match with four of the final six points.
Junior outside hitter
Clara Baumann (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East) led the Scots with nine kills and 27 digs in a solid all-around performance. O'Neil finished with six kills and two total blocks, while junior outside hitter
India Medaris (Napa, Calif./Justin Siena) and senior
Brooke Hunter (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) added five kills apiece. Hunter also had nine assists and seven digs, with senior setter
Samantha Bongiorno (Dallas, Texas/Shelton) delivering 16 assists and eight digs. First year
Alexis Foret (Copperas Cove, Texas/Copperas) contributed 20 digs. Jaelyn Arndt paced Augsburg with 14 kills.
Macalester continues MIAC play with a home match against Hamline on Friday, Oct. 7. The match starts at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
