ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team lost a competitive MIAC match to visiting Hamline University, 25-17, 25-22, 25-23 Friday evening in the Leonard Center. The result leaves the Scots with an overall record of 7-11, including a 1-5 mark in league play. The Pipers improve to 7-7, 2-3 MIAC.
After falling in the first set, 25-17, Macalester battled in the second set. A kill by junior outside hitter
India Medaris (Napa, Calif./Justin Siena) and two service aces from first year defensive specialist
Deborah Pickford (Denver, Colo./East) helped the Scots score four straight points to lead, 21-20. Pipers answered by scoring five of the final six points to take the set, 25-22. In the third set, Macalester trailed by as many as nine points before pulling to within one, 24-23. But Beth Goodman put away a kill for the Pipers, giving Hamline the set and match.
Junior outside hitter
Clara Baumann (Wausau, Wis./East) led Macalester with eight kills and 15 digs, while senior setter
Brooke Hunter (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) had six kills, 12 assists and 11 digs. Senior setter
Samantha Bongiorno (Richardson, Texas/Shelton School) added 13 assists, with first year
Alexis Foret (Copperas Cove, Texas/Copperas) recording 15 digs. Goodman had 11 kills to pace Hamline, which had 42 kills compared to 29 for the Scots.
Macalester plays a non-conference match at Crown College on Monday, Oct. 10, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in St. Bonifacius, Minn.
