Men’s Soccer: Late Goals Give No. 7 Macalester a 2-0 Win over Saints

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Two goals in the final 12 minutes of the game allowed the seventh-ranked Macalester College men's soccer team to beat St. Scholastica, 2-0 in a key regional game Sunday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The Scots remain unbeaten at 8-0-1 overall, while the Saints drop to 4-4.

Macalester controlled play for most of the game but were unable to find the net until late. Senior midfielder Charlie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) hit the post and a follow-up shot by junior midfielder Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck-St. Mary's) went just over the top of the goal in the 61st minute. Then in the 78th minute, a long throw-in by Spurr into the goal area was bandied about in the air by multiple players until senior forward Austin Burrows (Roseville, Calif./Jesuit) headed it home for a 1-0 Scots' lead.

With time running down, Burke countered up the middle with a long run and was fouled near the top of the Saints' penalty area. Burke took the ensuing free kick and sent a rocket into the top of the goal with 45 seconds left for his third goal of the season.

The Scots took 20 shots in the game compared to eight for St. Scholastica, as senior goalkeeper Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) made one save for his seventh shutout of the season. Corrado Rosato recorded five saves in goal for the Saints.

The game was a rematch of last season's NCAA first round match-up, which the Scots won 1-0 on a goal by Burrows in the 89th minute.

Macalester returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 1 with a conference game at St. Olaf. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
