NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team played St. Olaf to a 1-1 draw in a MIAC game Saturday afternoon at Rolf Melby Field. The Scots, ranked sixth nationally, remain unbeaten at 8-0-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the league. The Oles are now 4-1-4, 2-0-3 MIAC.
Macalester took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute, when sophomore midfielder
Clayton Smith (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) volleyed home a long pass from junior midfielder
Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck-St. Mary's). It was Burke's team-leading fourth assist of the season.
With the Scots protecting the one-goal lead late in the second half, a foul was called on a Macalester defender in the penalty area in the 81st minute. Pato Cortina converted the ensuing penalty kick to tie the score at 1-1. Neither team found the net over the next 29 minutes. The tie came in a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament second-round game, won by St. Olaf, 1-0.
Senior goalkeeper
Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) recorded two saves in goal for the Scots. Of Vainer's three goals allowed so far this season, two of them have been penalty kicks. The goal ended a streak of over 668 minutes without allowing a goal for Vainer and the Scots, whose last goal allowed came against Wartburg on Sept. 5.
Ben Braman recorded six saves for the Oles, who were outshot, 15-8.
Macalester plays a non-conference game at No. 17 Luther College on Sunday, Oct. 2, beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Decorah, Iowa.
