NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team earned its first MIAC victory of the season with a 3-1 win at St. Olaf Friday night. The Scots, who won by scores of 25-23, 25-19, 15-25, 28-26, improve to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Oles drop to 7-9, 0-3 MIAC.
In the first set, Macalester put away 19 kills in holding off St. Olaf, 25-23. Junior outside hitter
Clara Baumann (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East) had five kills, while junior
India Medaris (Napa, Calif./Justin Siena) and senior
Brooke Hunter (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) added four kills apiece in the set. Baumann tallied five more kills in the second set, as the Scots built a 20-15 edge before winning, 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
St. Olaf took control of the third set with a 15-6 advantage, eventually scoring the final five points for a 25-15 win. With the match on the line, the two teams played a nail-biter in the fourth set. With the Oles ahead, 23-20, kills by Baumann and senior middle hitter
Caitlyn O'Neil (Carmichael, Calif./Rio Americano) helped Macalester score three straight points to tie the score at 23-23. But St. Olaf threatened to tie up the match by taking a 26-25 lead. An Ole attack error tied the score, then Hunter registered a kill to set up match point. Another St. Olaf attack error gave the Scots the four-set win, avenging a loss to the Oles in a non-conference meeting earlier this season.
Baumann finished with game highs of 17 kills and 28 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Medaris ended up with 12 digs, while Hunter recorded a triple-double with 11 kills, 21 assists and 10 digs. Senior setter
Samantha Bongiorno (Dallas, Texas/Shelton) delivered 22 assists to go with 14 digs, and senior libero
Hoai-Nam Bui (McLean, Va./Langley) notched 24 digs in the win. Lauren Rewers paced St. Olaf with 15 kills.
Macalester returns to action on Friday, Sept. 30 against Carleton in another MIAC match. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
