ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team lost an MIAC match to the College of Saint Benedict, 25-23, 25-13, 25-21 Wednesday night on the road. The result gives the Scots a 5-8 record overall and 0-2 in conference play, while the Blazers improve to 6-7, 1-1 MIAC.
Macalester stayed close in the first set, erasing a 16-11 deficit to tie the score at 22-22. After senior
Brooke Hunter (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) answered a CSB kill with one of her own to knot the set at 23-23, a kill by Ashley Trustheim and a Scots' ball handling error gave the Blazers a 25-23 win. Saint Benedict controlled play in the second set, earning a 25-13 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Scots did not go quietly, battling back in the third set to tie the score at 20-20. The Blazers answered by scoring two of the next three points before getting three straight kills to close out the set and match, 25-21. Junior outside hitters
India Medaris (Napa, Calif./Justin Siena) and
Clara Baumann (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East) each had three kills in the final set.
Medaris finished with a team-best seven kills, while Baumann had six kills and 12 digs. Hunter contributed 16 assists to go with four kills and eight digs. Senior libero
Hoai-Nam Bui (McLean, Va./Langley) recorded 17 digs.
Macalester continues MIAC play with a conference match at St. Olaf on Friday, Sept. 23. The first serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
