Women’s Soccer: Gustavus Downs Macalester, 2-0

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team opened MIAC play with a 2-0 loss to Gustavus Adolphus Tuesday afternoon at Gustie Soccer Field. The defeat is the first of the season for the Scots, who are now 3-1-1 on the season. The Gusties improve to 4-0-1.

In a match-up of two of the top teams in the North Region, Gustavus, ranked fifth regionally, took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Paula Miller in the 35th minute. Less than seven minutes later, Macalester almost tied the score when a shot by senior forward Kara Komoto (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake) hit the post. The Scots, ranked sixth in the region, put three shots on goal in the second half but were unable to score the equalizer. Grace Brustad put the game out of reach with a goal in the 90th minute, as Gustavus went on to win, 2-0.

Juniors Rachel Wilson-King (Tucson, Ariz./St. Gregory College Prep) and Emma Toomer (Leesburg, Va./Loudon County) each played a half in goal for Macalester and each made two saves. Ashley Becker registered five saves for the Gusties, who were the only MIAC team to beat Macalester during the regular season last year.

The Scots return home to host Concordia on Saturday, Sept. 17 in another MIAC contest. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
