ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team held off a rally from Coe College to win a non-conference game in overtime, 75-69 Saturday afternoon in the Leonard Center. The Scots improve to 3-1 with the victory, while the Kohawks drop to 2-2.
Macalester took control of the game in the first half, leading by as many as 18 points in taking a 38-22 advantage into halftime. The Scots made seven three-pointers, including three from junior guard
Gunnar Goeden (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North), who led all players with 11 points in the first half. Defensively, the Scots held Coe to just 22 points on 38.5 percent shooting from the field and no threes.
In the second half the Kohawks came out hot, scoring the first nine points to spark an 18-5 run that cut the Scots' lead to three, 43-40 midway through the half. Coe came as close as one point but Macalester responded, eventually pushing the lead to 58-53 following a pair of free throws from sophomore guard
Michael Gutierrez (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Prep Academy) with just under two minutes to play. A three-pointer by Matt Vonderhaar and a free throw from senior guard
Jordan Black-Mathews (Dallas, Texas/Covenant Christian) made the score 59-56, then Austin Roth drained a deep three to tie the score at 59-59 with 1:12 on the clock. Neither team converted on its next two possessions, sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, the score was still tied, 67-67 with 1:31 remaining when senior guard
Dylan Kilgour (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley) scored on a layup and was fouled. He made the ensuing free throw, sparking an 8-0 run that put the Scots on top for good, 75-67. Senior center
Kareem Ismail (Pasadena, Calif./Flintridge Prep) also had three points in the run, while Gutierrez added a basket. Macalester was 4-of-5 from the floor and 8-of-11 from the line in the overtime period.
Gutierrez led all players with 26 points, including 13-of-14 from the charity stripe, to go with nine rebounds and four assists. Kilgour finished with 15 points, while Ismail tallied a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds to go with six assists, three blocks and a steal. Junior guard
Brett Olson (New London, Minn./New London-Spicer) also grabbed nine rebounds. Matt Meyer had 18 points and Vonderhaar contributed 13 points and 10 boards for Coe.
Macalester plays its final non-conference game of the season on Monday, Nov. 28 at Martin Luther College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in New Ulm, Minn.
