NEW ULM, Minn. – Senior guard
Dylan Kilgour (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley) scored 29 points as the Macalester College men's basketball team went on the road and beat Martin Luther College, 80-64 in a non-conference game Monday night. The win came in the final non-conference game of the season for the Scots, who improve to 4-1 on the season. The Knights drop to 1-4.
After spotting Macalester a 14-8 lead early in the first half, Martin Luther went on a 17-3 run to take control of the game, 25-17 with 7:23 left in the half. A trio of Scots brought Macalester back with a 15-4 run before halftime to take a 32-29 edge at the break. Kilgour, senior center
Kareem Ismail (Pasadena, Calif./Flintridge Prep) and junior guard
Brett Olson (New London, Minn./New London-Spicer) each tallied five points in the run, with Kilgour and Olson hitting back-to-back threes. Kilgour led all players with 15 points in the first half.
Momentum stayed with the Orange and Blue to start the second half, as a three by Olson sparked a 9-2 run that made the score 41-31 Macalester with 15 minutes to play. With the Scots up 56-48 with 6:29 on the clock, three-pointers by Olson and sophomore guard
Carl Salvino (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) ignited an 8-2 run for a 64-50 advantage with 3:38 left. The Knights never came closer than 11 points the rest of the way, as Macalester wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a 4-1 record.
Kilgour poured in 29 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field while hitting five three-pointers. The performance was his highest offensive output since a 40-point effort as a sophomore back on Nov. 23, 2013. Olson scored a career-high 15 points and made 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Sophomore guard
Michael Gutierrez (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Prep Academy) contributed 11 points, five rebounds and five assists, while senior guard
Jordan Black-Mathews (Dallas, Texas/Covenant Christian) also had 11 points, five boards and three assists. Ismail finished with nine points, five assists, two blocks and a game-high 12 rebounds. Luke Rothe led the Knights with 16 points.
Macalester begins MIAC play on Wednesday, Nov. 30 against defending national champion St. Thomas on the road. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
