ST. PAUL, Minn. – In a battle between two nationally-ranked MIAC rivals, the 15th-ranked Macalester College men's soccer team lost to No. 24 St. Thomas, 1-0 Friday night at Macalester Stadium. The Scots are now 8-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play, while the Tommies remain unbeaten at 10-0-2, 5-0-1 MIAC.
The game's lone goal came in the 17th minute after a foul near the Macalester penalty area gave St. Thomas a free kick from 20 yards out. Mark Heydt blasted the ensuing free kick into the upper right corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead. With time running down in the second half, the Scots nearly tied the score on shots by senior midfielder
Charlie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) and junior midfielder
Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck-St. Mary's) in a scramble in front of the Tommies' goal. But Spurr's final shot went just wide of the left post, as St. Thomas closed out the win.
Macalester outshot the Tommies, 11-6, including 8-2 in the second half. Senior goalkeeper
Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) made one save in goal for the Scots, while Aidan Hogan recorded two saves for St. Thomas
Macalester plays a non-conference game on Monday, Oct. 10 against the University of Northwestern. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
