Men’s Soccer: No. 15 Macalester Tops Northwestern, 2-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team won a non-conference game against the University of Northwestern, 1-0  Monday evening at Macalester Stadium. The Scots, ranked 15th nationally, improve to 9-2-2 on the season, while the Eagles drop to 5-7-1.

Macalester opened the scoring in the 13th minute, when a long throw by Zach Moore (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) was headed on by first year defender Max Kent (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park) to junior forward Danny Baumann (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) at the back post. Baumann then headed the ball past goalkeeper Turner Main and into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

Less than four minutes before halftime, junior forward Ionatan Kuperwajs (Redmond, Wash./Woodinville) received a long pass up the middle from junior defender Colby King (Newcastle, N.H./The Governor's School), beat his defender and blasted a shot into the net for his second goal of the season. The Eagles got on the scoreboard in the second half, with Chris Cleope scoring an unassisted goal in the 70th minute.

Senior goalkeeper Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) played the first half, making one save. Sophomore goalkeeper Colton Wenig (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) was in goal for the second half and also made one save, as the Scots outshot Northwestern, 12-6.
