ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester racked up 531 yards on offense, including 300 on the ground, in a 41-13 victory over visiting Grinnell College Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The victory is the first of the season for the Scots, who are now 1-2. The Pioneers fall to 0-3 on the year.
Macalester took the opening kickoff and drove 67 yards on 10 plays on their first drive. Sophomore quarterback
Christian Adams (Alexandria, La./Pineville) hit junior wide receiver
Garrett Eichhorn (Bethesda, Md. Walt Whitman) for a 17-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead. After Grinnell was forced to punt on its first possession, a bad snap gave the Scots the ball at the Pioneers' 11 yard line. First year quarterback
Alec Beatty (Topeka, Kan./Topeka) ran the ball in on the next play to put Macalester on top, 13-0.
In the second quarter, Grinnell got on the scoreboard with a 72-yard drive capped by an eight-yard run from Carson Dunn to make the score 13-6. The Scots answered on their next possession, taking the ball 77 yards on 11 plays and scoring on a four-yard touchdown run by first year running back
Jeremy Stephan (Duluth, Minn.Marshall) for a 20-6 lead.
Although must of the damage was done on the ground, Macalester used a couple big passing plays in the second half to pull away. Sophomore receiver
Sam Bordo (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Twp.) caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Adams, who also linked up with senior receiver
Victor Bordo (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Twp.) for an 89-yard touchdown, both in the third quarter.
In the final quarter, sophomore running back
Jacob Jones (Hanceville, Ala./Holly Pond) punctuated a 20-play, 97-yard drive with a one-yard scoring run. Grinnell quarterback Sam Poulos hit Henry Cummings for a 42-yard touchdown to close out the scoring.
Senior running back
Zandy Stowell (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) led the ground attack with 102 yards on 14 carries. Beatty finished with 53 yards on six carries, and Stephan had 49 yards on nine carries. Adams was 6-for-11 passing with 177 yards and three touchdowns. Senior quarterback
Benny Goldman (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./John Jay) completed all eight of his attempts for 50 yards. Senior receiver
Hunter Johnson (Malibu, Calif./Malibu) caught five passes, while
Victor Bordo had two catches for 105 yards.
Defensively, the Scots were led by sophomore linebacker
Brett Graham (Celebratin, Fla./Celebration) with eight tackles. Sophomore linebacker
Elliot Tanin (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) had 1.5 sacks, while first year cornerback
Luke Bishop (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) had an interception.
Poulos led Grinnell with 37 yards rushing and 166 yards passing.
Macalester faces Knox College on Saturday, Oct. 3, beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Galesburg, Ill.
