ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester was held scoreless in the second half, as Hamline pulled away for a 27-10 victory in the annual Paint Bucket Game Saturday night at Macalester Stadium. The loss drops the Scots to 0-2 on the season, while the Pipers improve to 2-0.
The game started out well for the hosts, as Macalester forced Hamline to punt on its first possession. Senior linebacker
Fabian Arrizon (Hayward, Calif./Mount Eden) blocked the punt, with junior defensive back
Forest Redlin (Tempe, Ariz./Tempe Preparatory Academy) recovering the ball on the Pipers' 15 yard line. On the Scots' first play, an errant snap resulted in a 16-yard loss, and Macalester ended up settling for a 36-yard field goal from junior kicker
Ben Haltmaier (Short Hills, NJ/The Pingry School) for a 3-0 lead.
The Pipers got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Johnson to Naji El-Araby. Following the score, senior wide receiver
Victor Bordo (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Twp.) returned the kickoff to the 50, giving the Scots good field position. But the drive stalled at the Hamline 31, and Macalester turned the ball over on downs. An interception by senior linebacker
Ryan Fleming (Charlotte, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) gave the Scots the ball at midfield, only to have the Pipers hold again and force a punt.
With time winding down in the half, Johnson hit Nick Kampa for a 50-yard touchdown 1:14 before halftime to lead, 13-3. On the next possession the Scots quickly worked the ball down the field, culminating in a 35-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback
Christian Adams (Alexandria, La./Pineville) to sophomore
Sam Bordo (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Twp.) with 18 seconds left. Although Hamline outgained the Scots 256-92 in total offense in the first half, Macalester headed into halftime on a positive note, trailing 13-10.
The momentum gained by the late scoring drive did not carry over into the second half, as the Scots went scoreless on five drives after halftime. Four ended with punts, and Hamline's Emmanuel Kornah intercepted Adams to end a drive in the fourth quarter. Johnson scored on a 13 yard run in the third quarter and hit Kampa for a nine-yard touchdown early in the fourth.
Adams completed 12-of-23 for 115 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked six times and intercepted once. Sophomore running back
Jacob Jones (Hanceville, Ala./Holly Pond) rushed for 34 yards, and
Sam Bordo caught four passes for 47 yards and a touchdown. Hamline's Austin Duncan, who ran for 240 yards in last year's match-up, had 119 yards on 30 attempts. Johnson finished with 301 yards on 19-of-29 passing, and Kampa had seven receptions for 100 yards.
On defense, senior defensive tackle
Zach Hauser (Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington) led the Scots with 10 tackles, including seven solo.
Macalester is off next week, returning to action on Saturday, Sept. 26 with a home game against Grinnell at 1:00 p.m.
