GROVE CITY, Pa. --Â Macalester rebounded from Friday's first-round loss to win its final two games and claim fifth place at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championship.
The Scots began the day with an 8-2 win over Monmouth in the morning before downing Utica, 9-5, in the fifth-place game in the afternoon.
Macalester took a 2-0 lead over Monmouth on goals by
Hannah Currens and
Sarah Shoemaker and led 3-1 after the first period when
Hannah Bonestroo scored with 53 seconds remaining in the opening period.
The Scots got the lone goal of the second quarter when Shoemaker scored scored her second goal of the game. Bonestroo,
Brooke Finney and
Zexin Nai scored in the third quarter to give Macalester a 7-1 lead and
Kaia Lund scored the Scots' final goal in the 8-2 win.
Anya Phillips made eight saves in the win.
Macalester jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Utica after one period on goals by Finney, Bonestroo and
Hannah Gray but the Pioneers scored the only two goals of the second quarter and answered three third-quarter goals by Gray as the Scots took a 6-5 lead into the final quarter.
Defensively, Macalester shut down Utica while Finney, Shoemaker and Bonestroo scored goals to give the Scots the 9-5 win.
Phillips backstropped Macalester's defensive effort by make nine saves in the game.
