ROSEMOUNT, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team matched up against Martin Luther (4-3 overall) in a non-conference doubleheader at the Irish Sports Dome Thursday. The Scots came away with a pair of wins as
Miranda Stokes struck out 14 batters in a 10-0 game one victory and
Brittany Ehmann struck out eight in a 9-1 game two win.
Macalester improves to 10-5 overall this season in non-conference action following the sweep.
Game One: Macalester 10, Martin Luther 0 (5 innings) It was an impressive outing on the mound for senior
Miranda Stokes. In five innings, Stokes struck out 14 batters out of 17 faced. She gave up one hit and walked one. With the win, her record on the mound improves to 3-3 this season.
The Scots collected 14 hits in four innings at the plate. They punched in one run in the first, four in the second, four in the third and one final run in the bottom of the fourth.
Senior shortstop
Saraswati Wilson led all batters with a three-for-three performance at the plate.
Abby Cox and
Maggie Abeles each recorded two hits in the game. Cox homered for the third time this season and finished with a team-high four RBI's. She leads the Scots with 17 RBI's this season and a .457 average at the plate.
Erin Slater crushed her first homerun of the season.
Brittany Ehmann was the third Scot to homer in the game, also recording her first of the season as it brought in three runs.
Game Two: Macalester 9, Martin Luther 1 (5 innings) The Scots kept things going in game two, scoring six runs in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth to soar to a 9-1 (five inning) victory.
Brittany Ehmann pitched five complete innings and gave up just three hits. She struck out eight and had no walks. Her record on the mound improves to 5-2 this season.
The Scots finished with eight hits to the Knights' three. Macalester's six-run second inning was sparked by doubles from
Nikki Caicedo and
Miranda Stokes.
Caicedo went three for four with two doubles in the series and recorded her eighth pickoff this season as the Scots' catcher.
Wilson and Stokes each recorded two RBI's in the game.
First year,
G.G. Gunther recorded her first career homerun, driving a ball over the centerfield fence to give Macalester their final run in the top of the fourth.
The Scots are scheduled to return to action on March 28 as they travel to Mankato, Minn. for a 1 p.m. doubleheader start time versus Bethany Lutheran. Weather related venue or time changes will be reported on
