MONMOUTH, Ill. --Â Washington & Jefferson broke open a close game with seven goals in both the second and third quarters en route to a 19-7 win over Macalester in both teams' final game of the Collegiate Water Polo Association West Round Robin tournament.
The Presidents jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game's first two minutes before
Hannah Gray struck for Macalester and, after Washington & Jefferson restored its two-goal lead,
Zexin Nai scored to make it a 3-2 score after one quarter.
From there, the Presidents dominated the next 16 minutes, outscoring the Scots, 14-2, in the second and third quarters to but the game out of reach.
Gray and
Hannah Bonestroo scored Macalester's goals in the middle quarters and Nai, Bonestroo and
Sarah Shoemaker scored in the final eight minutes as Macalester outscored W&J, 3-2, in the fourth quarter.
The Scots return to action next weekend when they take part in the CWPA East Round Robin in New London, Conn., hosted by Connecticut College. Macalester will open play with three matches Friday as they take on Carthage at 10:15 a.m. EDT, Monmouth at 3:15 p.m. and Penn State-Behrend at 7 p.m.
