ST. PAUL, Minn. – Junior forward
Austin Burrows (Roseville, Calif./Jesuit) scored in the 89th minute to give the Macalester College men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over St. Scholastica in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Friday night at Macalester Stadium. The Scots (14-1-5) advance to Saturday's second round to play St. Olaf, which beat UW-Oshkosh, 2-0 in the other first round game this evening.
With the game still scoreless in the final two minutes of regulation, a scramble in front of the St. Scholastica goal resulted in the ball being deflected by junior midfielder
Charlie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) out to Burrows. Burrows collected the ball and blasted a shot from 15 yards out into the goal, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. It was his eighth goal of the season, matching Spurr for the team lead.
The tally ended an evenly played stalemate, with both teams generating good scoring chances. In the first half, a shot by sophomore midfielder
Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck-St. Mary's) was tipped just over the crossbar by Saints' goalkeeper Sandy Davidson-Hunt. In the second half, Ben Phillips' shot was knocked off the goal line by sophomore defender
Colby King (Newcastle, N.H./The Governor's Academy), keeping the game scoreless until Burrows' heroics.
Junior goalkeeper
Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) registered six saves for Macalester, while Davidson-Hunt made eight saves for the Saints (18-3-1). The Scots enjoyed an 18-12 advantage in shots for the game.
Macalester hosts St. Olaf in the second round on Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Macalester Stadium. The winner advances next week's round of 16.
