Men’s Soccer: Macalester Tops Augsburg, 2-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester maintained its unbeaten record with a 2-0 triumph over visiting Augsburg College in a MIAC game Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The Scots (11-0-5) stay atop the conference standings with a 6-0-2 record in league play, while the Auggies drop to 6-8-2, 3-4-1 MIAC.

Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard until the 59th minute, when a corner kick taken by freshman defender Logan Harper (Westwood, Mass./St. Mark's School) was deflected into the goal by an Augsburg defender. Just over four minutes later, junior midfielder Charlie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) received a pass from junior midfielder Alan Schembri-Wismayer (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) and blasted a shot from 20 yards out into the goal for a 2-0 lead. It was Spurr's team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Macalester did not allow a shot until the final minute of the game, as junior goalkeeper Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) was required to make one save for his fourth consecutive shutout. Vainer and the Scots have not surrendered a goal since Oct. 10 in a 3-2 victory at St. Thomas. Tommy Molski recorded two saves in goal for Augsburg.

Before the game, Macalester recognized seniors Jac Carlson (Clive, Iowa/Waukee Community), Sam Finegold (Fox Point, Wis./Kent School), Wilson Merrell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington), Dylan Wong (Clarksburg, Calif./Jesuit) and Kovas Zygas (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township North) as a part of Senior Day.

The win sets up a match-up between the top two teams in the MIAC, as the Scots host second-place St. John's on Tuesday, Oct. 27. The game, which will most likely decide the conference regular-season champion, will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
