Men’s Soccer: Macalester Clinches MIAC Title with Victory over St. John’s, 2-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team captured the MIAC regular-season title with a 2-1 triumph over second-place Saint John's Tuesday night at Macalester Stadium. The Scots, who are ranked 17th nationally, remain unbeaten with a 12-0-5 record overall and a 7-0-2 mark in league play. The Johnnies fall to 11-3-2 overall, 6-2-1 MIAC.

Just 5:25 into the game, sophomore forward Danny Baumann (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) collected a pass from junior forward Alan Schembri-Wismayer (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) in the penalty area and beat Saint John's goalkeeper Kevin Lebahn for a 1-0 lead. The Johnnies answered less than five minutes later, as Paul Wageman blasted a free kick past junior goalkeeper Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) from 22 yards out to tie the score at 1-1.

The game remained knotted until the 55th minute. Schembri-Wismayer pounced on a turnover, took a few touches and buried a shot into the left side of the goal to put the Scots up for good. Saint John's pressed for the equalizer, but Vainer was up to the task, making four saves after Schembri-Wismayer's tally to preserve the lead and the win. The regular-season crown is Macalester's first since the 2010 squad won the league with an 8-2 record.

Vainer finished with seven saves, as the Johnnies held a 14-6 advantage in shots. Lebahn made two saves for Saint John's.

The Scots will be the top seed in next week's MIAC Tournament and will have a bye into Wednesday's semifinals.

Macalester wraps up the regular season schedule with a conference game at Bethel on Saturday, Oct. 31. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul.
