Football: Macalester Runs to 35-7 Victory at Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. – Macalester ran for 416 yards to earn a Midwest Conference North Division win at Lawrence, 35-7 Saturday afternoon at The Banta Bowl. With the victory, the Scots improve to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while the Vikings fall to 1-6, 0-3 MWC.

After a scoreless first quarter, first year quarterback Alec Beatty (Topeka, Kan./Topeka) reeled off a 73-yard touchdown run on his first carry of the game for a 7-0 lead. Lawrence got on the scoreboard after Macalester fumbled a punt that was recovered by the Vikings on the Scots' 19 yard line. Quarterback Ryan Butterfield threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Wes Hatcher to tie the score at 7-7.

On Macalester's next possession, the Scots marched 78 yards on 13 plays, capped by a five-yard touchdown run by Beatty for a 14-7 lead. Beatty's three-yard scoring run in the third quarter punctuated a nine-play, 77-yard drive and marked his third consecutive touchdown of the game.

After the Scots forced the Vikings to punt on their next possession, senior running back Zandy Stowell (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) opened the drive with a 42-yard run to the Lawrence 14. He eventually ran it in from the one yard line for a 28-7 advantage. Stowell closed out the scoring and the victory with a 22-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Stowell followed up last week's 196-yard performance against Beloit with 193 yards and two touchdowns on 25 attempts for a 7.7 per carry average. Beatty had his best day as a Scot, running the ball 13 times for 179 yards and three touchdowns. He also led the defense with six tackles, including four solo.

The Scots defense limited the Vikings to 160 yards of total offense. Sophomore linebacker Phil Wettersten (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) and first year defensive linemen Jonathan Goldman (Scorsdale, N.Y./Eastchester) and Aaron Dimler (Maplewood, Minn./Roseville) each had sacks.

Macalester plays a key Midwest Conference North game at Carroll University on Saturday, Oct. 31. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Waukesha, Wis.
