FOOTBALL: Macalester Edged by Carroll on the Road, 25-21

WAUKESHA, Wis. – A touchdown reception by Tyler Enright with 3:31 remaining in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference, as Macalester lost a Midwest Conference game at Carroll University, 25-21 Saturday afternoon at Schneider Stadium. The loss drops the Scots to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference, while the Pioneers improve to 5-3, 3-1 MWC.

Following a Macalester touchdown that put the Scots up, 21-18 with just over nine minutes remaining, Carroll put together a 12-play, 66-yard drive that culminated in a touchdown pass from Kyle Burlingame to Enright. Macalester took over at its own 48 and drove to the Carroll 35. But the drive stalled there and the Scots turned the ball over on downs.

On the Pioneers' second possession of the game, sophomore defensive back Jack Schultenover (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Secondary) intercepted Burlingame and returned it for a 35-yard touchdown and a 7-0 Macalester lead. Late in the second quarter, first year quarterback Andrew Smith (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine) connected with junior receiver Tre Nowaczynski (Hales Corners, Wis./West Allis Central) on a 51-yard touchdown pass to put the Scots up, 14-0.

Just before the end of the first half, Burlingame hit Kevin Jennings for a 44-yard touchdown to make the halftime score 14-6 Macalester.

In the third quarter, a three-yard touchdown pass from Burlingame to Connor O'Donoghue made the score 14-12. On Macalester's second play after the touchdown, the Scots fumbled and Diquan Blanks recovered for the Pioneers at the Macalester 40. Burlingame and Jennings connected again on a 16-yard touchdown to give Carroll its first lead of the game, 18-14.

After the Scots stopped the Pioneers on their first possession of the fourth quarter, the Carroll punter fumbled and Nowaczyinski recovered on the Pioneers' 18 yard line. First year quarterback Alec Beatty (Topeka, Kan./Topeka) eventually ran it in from four yards to put the Scots briefly on top, 21-18.

Macalester compiled 192 yards of total offense compared to 358 for Carroll. Three Scots quarterbacks combined to complete 5-of-14 for 68 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Senior running back Zandy Stowell (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) rushed 14 times for 64 yards, while Beatty finished with 48 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Sophomore wide receiver Sam Bordo (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Twp.) caught four passes for 17 yards. Junior linebacker Glen Hartford (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) led the defense with 12 total tackles.

Burlingame completed 20-of-35 for 183 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Bennett Kothe ran for 115 yards.

Macalester completes the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 7, when the Scots host St. Norbert  at 1:00 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
