ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senior running back
Zandy Stowell (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) scored four touchdowns as Macalester beat Beloit, 28-14 in a Midwest Conference North Division game Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The Scots even their records at 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while the Buccaneers drop to 2-4, 1-1 MWC.
Macalester's defense also rose to the occasion, holding Beloit's potent offense to 272 total yards, over 200 yards under the Buccaneers' average of 489.8 yards per game through the first five games.
On Beloit's first possession, senior linebacker
Fabian Arrizon (Hayward, Calif./Mount Eden) intercepted Buccaneer quarterback Danny May at the Beloit 37 yard line. The Scots capitalized, with Stowell eventually running in from 28 yards out for a 7-0 lead. After the defense forced a three-and-out, Macalester put together a seven play, 57-yard drive that ended in a one-yard touchdown run for Stowell.
In the second quarter, the Scots had another 57-yard drive, gulping seven minutes, 28 seconds off the clock in 15 plays. Stowell ran it in from the three to give Macalester a 21-0 lead that they eventually would take into halftime.
Beloit got on the scoreboard near the end of the third quarter on a 28-yard touchdown run from Mason Dixon. The Scots answered with a 60-yard drive that saw Stowell rush five times for 41 yards, including a five-yard touchdown run. His four-touchdown day set a career high for Stowell, who had three touchdowns in the Scots' 41-19 win at Knox earlier this season.
Beloit closed out the scoring with a seven-yard pass to Kam Sallee with less than three minutes to play.
Stowell finished with a season-best 196 yards on 31 carries, averaging 6.3 yards per carry. First year
Jeremy Stephan (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) had 84 yards on 12 carries, while junior receiver
Tre Nowaczynski (Hales Corners, Wis./West Allis Central) caught five passes for 41 yards. Senior quarterback
Benny Goldman (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./John Jay) started for the first time in his career and completed 15 passes in 21 attempts for 108 yards.
Defensively, first year safety
Alec Beatty (Topeka, Kan./Topeka) had two interceptions and a fumble recovery to go with seven tackles. Sophomore linebacker
Elliot Tanin (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) also picked off a pass and made six tackles. Senior defensive tackle
Zach Hauser (Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington) led the way with nine total tackles and two sacks.
Dixon, who was averaging 153.2 yards rushing per game before today, ran 20 times for 122 yards and a touchdown. May was 10-of-19 for 121 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions.
Macalester travels to Appleton, Wis., next week to face Lawrence College on Saturday, Oct. 24. The Midwest Conference North game starts at 1:00 p.m.
