Football: Macalester Shut Out by Ripon, 23-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Ripon College held Macalester scoreless to hand the Scots their first Midwest Conference defeat, 23-0 Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The result drops Macalester to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while the Red Hawks win their third straight game to improve to 4-1, 1-0 MWC.

After forcing the Scots to punt on their opening drive, Ripon drove 70 yards on 14 plays, culminating in Steve Covalt's eight-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Kuehl. Early in the second quarter the Red Hawks struck again with a 47-yard drive that ended in a one-yard run from Connor Greenwald for a 13-0 lead. Junior receiver Garrett Eichhorn (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) blocked the extra point attempt, the Scots' sixth block this season.

Ripon's defense, which stymied Macalester all day, contributed a touchdown in the third quarter, when Bradley Knoblock intercepted a pass from sophomore quarterback Christian Adams (Alexandria, La./Pineville) and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown. The Red Hawks closed out the scoring with a 20-yard field goal by Jordan Remsza in the fourth quarter. The loss is the Scots' first defeat in 11 games as a member of the Midwest Conference.

Macalester threw three interceptions, punted five times and turned the ball over on downs three times in their 11 possessions. Despite their failure to score, the Scots out-gained Ripon in total offense, 223-184.

Senior running back Zandy Stowell (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) had another strong game, rushing for 93 yards on 16 carries for a 5.8 yard average. Junior receiver Tre Nowaczynski (Hales Corners, Wis./West Allis Central) caught two passes for 38 yards. Defensively, senior lineman Zach Hauser (Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington) and sophomore linebacker Elliot Tanin (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) each had 15 tackles.

Next week the Scots host Beloit College on Saturday, Oct. 17, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
