Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Bonnie Gale scored twice, including a header off a corner kick, six minutes, 35 seconds into overtime, as Macalester came from behind to claim a 2-1 win over Wartburg in both teams' season opener.
Although the Scots had a 5-2 advantage in shots in the opening half, neither team was able to find the back of the next.
The Knights who controlled much of the play in the second half, finally got on the scoreboard in the 59th minutes when Brittany Frush got the ball at the top of the Macalester crease. After having her first shot blocked, she converted the rebound to give her team a 1-0 lead.
Wartburg had an 11-3 advantage in shots and 4-0 in corner kicks in the second half but, in the 73rd minute, a free kick by Gale, from 27 yards out, was placed perfectly and, despite the efforts of a Wartburg defender to head the ball out, the shot found the top-left corner of the net.
The Scots then scored on their lone opporunity of overtime as
Margaret Nemetz's out-swinging corner kick from the right corner found Gale making her way into the middle. The senior midfielder then redirected the ball with a header to the upper right corner of the net. Goalkeeper Beth Crow was able to get her hands on the ball but she was unable to keep it from getting past her and into the net for the game winner.
Wartburg outshot Macalester, 14-9, but the Scots held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Crow recorded two saves for the Knights while
Rachel Wilson-King made one save in the first half for Macalester and winning goalie
Emma Toomer, who entered the game in the second half, recorded three saves. Wartburg also had a 13-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Scots return to action Friday, Sept. 5, when they host the Associated Colleges of the Midwest Showcase, taking on Grinnell in a 7:30 p.m. game.
