Softball: MIAC campaign starts with two wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Macalester completed a pair of big comebacks to get the MIAC campaign off to a good start as the Scots toppled St. Benedict 10-8 and 12-11 for a conference sweep over the Blazers at Macalester Stadium.  The Scots completed the sweep by plating five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap, the walk-off tally coming on an Alisha Barritt (Sr., Oklahoma City, Okla. / Oklahoma School of Science & Math) double.  Mac began its comeback earlier in the frame when Cleo Nagy (Sr., Eugene, Ore. / Henry D. Sheldon) belted her third home run of the season and 20th of her collegiate career.

The Scots, who are now 10-6 on the season, also had a big come-from-behind victory in the opener.  St. Ben's snapped a 3-3 tie with three runs in the top of the fourth, only to see Macalester fight back with seven runs of its own in the fifth behind.  Key RBI hits late in the inning were delivered by Barritt and Anna Munson (Jr., La Crosse, Wis. / Central).  The team's seven-run fifth was its highest one-inning output of the year.

Abby Cox (So., Fort Worth, Tex. / Fort Worth Country Day) connected to left field for her first homer of the season and finished with two hits and three runs driven in.  Barritt gained the pitching win in relief.

In the nightcap, Barritt and Saraswati Wilson (Jr., Olathe, Kan. / Northwest) produced three hits apiece in the game, while adding two each were Nagy (including her homer) and winning pitcher out of the bullpen Brittany Ehmann (Jr., Island Lake, Ill. / Wauconda).  Four players contributed two RBIs.

The Scots host a pair of non-conference games tomorrow (March 30) against Northland (Wis.) at 1 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
