Macalester opened its 2014 water polo season with what was supposed to be seven games at the CWPA Division III Region Tournament in Utica, New York. The Scots went 2-3 in play Friday and Saturday, collecting wins over Monmouth (Ill.) and Penn State-Behrend, but Sunday's games were called off due to problems with the air system in the pool area.
In the tournament-opening 18-7 triumph over Monmouth, the Scots were led by
Adrienne Burgin (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif. / Acalanes) and
Sarah Shoemaker (Jr., Saratoga, Calif. / St. Francis) with two goals scored apiece. Burgin had four steals and
Chloe Kaulas (Sr., Chicago, Ill. / Latin School) handed out four assists.
Zexin Nai (So., Singapore / HWA Chong) and
Rachel Harrington-Abrams (Sr., Berkeley, Calif.) each contributed a goal to the winning cause.
Mac followed up this victory with a 9-6 defeat to Carthage (Wis.), but wrapped up the opening day with a 10-4 victory over Penn State-Behrend. Shoemaker and Harrington-Abrams each netted three goals, while Kaulas added one score to lead the way. Goalkeeper
Anya Phillips (Jr., Geneva, Fla. / Oviedo), who registered seven saves against Monmouth, made 13 stops to lead the defensive effort.
Macalester's defeats came to the hands of Carthage (Wis.), Grove City (Pa.) and Connecticut College.
Macalester goal-scoring leaders for the tournament were Shoemaker with 13, Burgin with 11, Harringtobn-Abrams with nine and and Nai with eight.
