ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Macalester College women's basketball team returned to Alumni Gymasium this afternoon for their second home contest of the 2014-15 season. The Scots took on the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets in a 2 p.m. non-conference match-up. UW-Superior handed Macalester their first loss of the season, coming away with a 69-49 win on the road.
Heading into the game 0-3, UW-Superior's record was not a reflection of their ability. Losing by just 10 points to Division II Minnesota Duluth in the Yellowjacket's previous contest, Macalester was up against a tough and worthy opponent. With today's results, Macalester falls to 2-1 overall this season and UW-Superior improves to 1-3.
Senior and top-scorer for Superior, Sally Linzmeier opened the game up with an easy two points in the paint. Macalester was unable to take hold of the lead at all during the remainder of today's game. The Scots trailed 6-17 with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half before six straight made free throws and a pair of jumpers by freshman center
Regan Fruh brought Macalester within one (20-21).
The Scots entered the half down 11 as they allowed UW-Superior to make a late run. The Yellowjackets carried their momentum into second-half play, holding a comfortable lead throughout the final 20 minutes.
Macalester was led by freshman players
Vivi Gregorich and
Regan Fruh. Gregorich finished with a season-high 17 points, shot two of five from beyond the arc, five for five at the line and pulled down six boards. Fruh finished with 15 points for the Scots, also a season-high. Fruh led the team in rebounding with eight, six of those coming on the offensive side.
Sally Linzmeier led the Yellowjackets with 15 points on five of nine shooting and a team-high four assists.
Macalester will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 25 as they face the University of Northwestern in a 5:45 p.m. tip off. Tuesday's game will serve as a men's and women's doubleheader, with the Macalester men's basketball team to follow at 7:45.
