Football: Scots improve to 2-1

Macalester scored on three of its first four possessions to take a 13-0 lead after a quarter of play and went on to beat Maranatha Baptist Bible 30-6 Saturday in Watertown, Wis.

The Scots improve to 2-1 after their third game of the year, while the Crusaders drop to 1-2 despite a big edge in time of possession and a slight lead in first downs gained.

Daniel Ricci (Sr., Menomonee Falls, Wis. / Brookfield Academy) carried the rushing load for Macalester, wrapping up his day with 21 carries for 126 yards and a 9-yard scoring run in the third quarter to put the visitors up 23-0.  Ethan Carpenter (Fy., Plymouth, Minn. / Robbinsdale Armstrong) added 53 yards on nine carries.

Benny Goldman (So., Goldens Bridge, N.Y. / John Jay) was Mac's quarterback, going 13-for-28 passing for 181 yards, including touchdowns to Tre Nowaczynski (Fy., Hales Corners, Wis. / West Allis Central) from 27 yards out and Hunter Johnson (So., Malibu, Calif.) from 29 yards away.  Nowaczynski pulled in six receptions for 87 yards.

Macalester's defensive unit held Maranatha to a 4-for-16 third-down conversion rate and was led by Ryan Fleming (So., Charlotte, Vt. / Champlain Valley Union) with nine tackles and a forced fumble.  Nate Yordy (Jr., Libertyville, Ill. ) added seven stops and Glen Hartford (Fy., North Andover, Mass. ) had five.  Bolton Howes (Jr., Lakewood, Colo. / Dakota Ridge) and Konnor Fleming (Jr., Charlotte, Vt.. / Champlain Valley Union) had interceptions to lead the seconday.

The Scots are off next weekend and return to action Oct. 5 for their home opener against Mayville State (N.D.).
