Men’s Soccer: Last-second score brings Scots exciting victory

Box Score
Appearing to be headed for a deadlock, Macalester scored with just 11 seconds left in the second and final overtime period to topple St. Scholastica 1-0 Saturday night in St. Paul.

Macalester now has won three matches in a row, all by shutout, and is even at 3-3 on the season.

Saturday's match was closely contested and each team had a similar about of scoring opportunities.  The Saints led by a slight 11-10 margin in shots and Mac led 5-3 in shots on goal.  CSS enjoyed a 5-2 corner kick advantage.

Defensively, the Scots were again very solid and increased their shutout string to three for the first time since the middle of the 2011 season.  With three, Mac matches its total shutout count for all of last season.

"To score with less than 10 seconds left in the second OT is something special for all of us," said coach Gregg Olson.  "Our team showed character.  We played back to back nights and still pulled a late result in the 199 minute of the weekend.  What a game!  Our depth pulled through for us tonight and we showed that we are a resilient team. And, our fans were critical to helping us through overtime.  With pouring rain and 109 minutes into the night, our fans remained loud and boisterous.

Just before the teams were about to walk away with a deadlock, Mac's Alan Schembri-Wismayer (Fy., Rochester, Minn. / Lourdes) headed in a pass from Dylan Wong (So., Clarksburg, Calif. / Jesuit) for his team-leading third goal of the season from just out front.

Goalkeeper Zeke Vainer posted two saves for his third straight shutout and to lower his goals against average to 1.36.

The Scots open MIAC competition next Wednesday (Sept. 18) at home against St. Thomas at 7:30 p.m.
