Macalester bounced back from an 11-0 defeat against regular-season conference champion St. Thomas in the first round of pool play competition at the MIAC Playoffs in Mankato to play a classic slugfest against St. Catherine, which scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to win a 13-12 thriller.
St. Thomas will represent Pool A Saturday and Sunday in the double-elimination portion of the playoffs after beating the Wildcats, while Macalester and St. Kate's end their seasons. The other pool winners were Bethel, St. Olaf and Gustavus. The Tommies are 29-1 all-time in the 10-year history of the conference playoffs.
After managing just two hits in the loss to No. 9-ranked St. Thomas, Macalester's bats came alive against St. Kate's.
Miranda Stokes (So., Perry, Utah / Box Elder) hit her team-leading eighth home run of the season and
Saraswati Wilson (So., Olathe, Kan. / Northwest) hit her third. Wilson went 3-for-4 on the game to finish with a .406 batting average, and
Emma Swanson (Fy., Ypsilanti, Mich.) went went 3-for-4 with four runs driven in. Stokes had three hits and a couple runs scored and finished with a .392 average.
Down 5-4, St. Kate's rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fourth to go on top 10-5. The SCU lead was not safe, however, as the Scots came back with one on the fifth inning and four big runs in the sixth to tie the contest 12-12. St. Catherine then plated the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh.
