Macalester and St. Catherine picked up a suspended game from early-April, starting the day with a five-run fifth inning lead and finishing up with an 11-7 victory over the visiting Wildcats. However, St. Kate's won game two of the twinbill 6-0 to gain the split.
The Scots will not make up an earlier postponed doubleheader and finish the regular season with a 5-15 MIAC slate and 13-25 mark. With the new format of the conference playoffs, Macalester will enter pool play competition Friday (May 3) at the MIAC tournament in Mankato. The winners of the four three-team pools advance to a four-team double-elimination tournament on Saturday and Sunday (May 4-5), also at Mankato's Caswell Park. Mac will learn after tomorrow's games which three-team pool they are in.
As a team which will be seed No. 9-12, the Scots will be randomly placed in one of the four pools. Check the
MIAC softball playoff website for details.
Macalester began the suspended game with a 9-5 advantage in the bottom of the fifth after snow fall stopped the April 5 opening game. The Wildcats crossed the plate a couple times in the sixth but the Scots responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame and held on for the 11-7 win. For the game, including the four-and-a-half innings nearly four weeks ago, the Scots received two hits each from
Saraswati Wilson (So., Olathe, Kan. / Northwest),
Anna Munson (So., La Crosse, Wis. / Central),
Brittany Ehmann (So., Island Lake, Ill. / Wauconda) and
Abby Cox (Fy., Fort Worth, Tex. / Fort Worth Country Day). Wilson and Munson each drove in three runs.
MIAC Pitcher of the Week Lindsey Klein took charge of the nightcap, blanking the Scots on four hits, two by
Tara Cayton (So., Pleasanton, Calif. / Amador Valley). Ahead 2-0, St. Catherine put things away by plating four insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Up until that point, Ehmann was pitching her third straight outstanding relief performance.
