Softball: Game two comeback falls a run short

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Macalester was held off the scoreboard in game one and through the first five frames of the nightcap, but nearly pulled out game two before falling by a run as visiting St. Olaf held on for the MIAC sweep.  The Oles took the opener 3-0 and claimed the nightcap 4-3.

Playing their third doubleheader in as many days and fourth in five days, the Scots put themselves in position to gain a split by plating three runs in the bottom of the sixth in the nightcap.  The first two came in when Miranda Stokes (So., Perry, Utah / Box Elder) led off with a single and scored on a deep home run to left field by Cleo Nagy (Jr., Eugene, Ore. / Henry D. Sheldon), her fourth round-tripper of the season.

The rally continued when Abby Cox (Fy., Fort Worth, Tex. / Fort Worth Country Day) followed Nagy's blast with a double and scored to make it 4-3 on a Courtney Nussbaumer (Sr., Brookfield, Wis. / East) singled up the middle.  St. Olaf, however, shut down the rally and held the Scots without a run in the seventh.

In game one, Nagy and Anna Munson (So., La Crosse, Wis. / Central) both went 2-for-4 .  Each team had five hits.

Mac out-hit the Oles 13-11 on the day as the Scots received solid pitching from Alisha Barritt (Jr., Oklahoma City, Okla. / Bethany) and Brittany Ehmann (So., Island Lake, Ill. / Wauconda)  in game one, and from Stokes and Ehmann in game two.  In eight  superb innings of relief pitching on the day, Ehmann yielded only two hits and a couple unearned runs.

The Scots (12-24 overall and 4-14 in the MIAC) are right back at  it tomorrow when they host St. Catherine in a suspended doubleheader from April 5.  They'll pick up with Macalester leading game one by five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and then follow with game two.
