Macalester belted three home runs and a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to out-slug Hamline 11-10 in the opening game of an MIAC doubleheader at the Rochester Dome. The Pipers then claimed the split by edging the Scots 4-3 in game two.
The Scots are now 11-13 on the season and 3-3 in MIAC play. Hamline is 8-8 overall, 4-2 in the MIAC.
Miranda Stokes (So., Perry, Utah / Box Elder),
Brittany Ehmann (So., Island Lake, Ill. / Wauconda) and
Erin Slater (So., Federal Way, Wash. / Decatur) homered for the Scots in the opening game. Stokes connected for her fifth of the season, Ehmann collected her fourth, and Slater's round-tripper was the first of her Mac career.
Macalester rallied for five runs in the bottom of the third frame on a Stokes three-run shot and Slater two-run blast. Hamline, however crossed the plate five times in the fifth to go up 7-6. Hamline extended its margin to 10-7 in the top of the seventh before Mac responded with four two-out runs to pull out the dramatic victory.
Hits by
Cleo Nagy (Jr., Eugene, Ore. / Henry D. Sheldon) and
Courtney Nussbaumer (Sr., Brookfield, Wis. / East), followed by a Piper error and a walk to
Abby Cox (Fy., Fort Worth, Tex. / Fort Worth Country Day), made the score 10-9 before the Scots took the win on a
Saraswati Wilson (So., Olathe, Kan. / Northwest) walk-off two-run double. Wilson was 3-for-5 on the game, while Ehmann, Nussbaumer and Nagy each had two hits.
The Scots tallied three second-inning runs, the last one on a
Anna Munson (So., La Crosse, Wis. / Central) double, to take a 3-0 advantage in the second game. However, the Pipers pulled out the split by scoring single runs in each of the next four frames.
Mac plays Tuesday (April 16) at Bethel and Thursday (April 18) at St. Mary's.
