Mac vs. Utica
Macalester closed out its 2013 season Friday and Saturday by beating Utica (N.Y.) in the fifth-place game of the College Water Polo Association (CWPA) conference championship tournament in New London, Connecticut. The Scots won two of their three games over the weekend, falling to Carthage (Wis.) 6-3 in the first round before coming back to beat Penn State-Behrend 13-4 later on Friday. The victory in Saturday's fifth-place contest was by a hard-fought 8-6 tally.
The Scots opened with Carthage, a team they had already narrowly defeated twice earlier this season. With the game deadlocked 1-1, Carthage netted four goals in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.
Mac opened up a 7-0 first quarter lead over Penn State-Behrend and were never threatened.
Chloe Kaulas (So., Chicago, Ill. / Latin School) tallied four goals to lead the way.
Sarah Shoemaker (So., Saratoga, Calif. / St. Francis) scored three times and
Suzanne Oh (Sr., Waukesha, Wis. / North) added a pair of goals.
Macalester led 5-2 after the first quarter against Utica and held on.
Adrienne Burgin (So., Walnut Creek, Calif. / Acalanes) netted four goals to pace the Scots and Kaulas scored twice.
Anya Phillips (So., Geneva, Fla. / Oviedo) registered nine saves against Carthage, seven against Behrend and nine against Utica for a total of 25 in the three games.
Connecticut College beat Grove City (Pa.) for the team championship.
Mac was represented on the all-tournament team by Phillips (first team) and Kaulas (second team).
