Water Polo: Campaign begins in California

Macalester began its 2013 water polo campaign with an ambitious eight-game schedule in Southern California over Spring Break (March 15-20) and were 0-8.  The Scots fell to Division I Virginia Military, Redlands (Calif.), La Verne (Calif.) (twice), Division I Iona (N.Y.), Whittier (Calif.), Chapman (Calif.) and Cal State-San Bernardino.

Mac's best game was a 13-9 defeat to La Verne at the Cal Baptist Tournament in Riverside.  Zexin Nai (Fy., Singapore / HWA Chong) tallied four goals, Sarah Shoemaker (So., Saratoga, Calif. / St. Francis)  scored three times, and Chloe Kaulas (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / Latin School) added two goals.

For the eight-game trip, Kaulas and Shoemaker led the Scots in goal scoring.  Kaulas led the way with 15 and Shoemaker was right behind with 14.  Rachel Harrington-Abrams (Jr., Berkeley, Calif.) chipped in with five goals.  Philips averaged 10 saves per game from here goalkeeper position.

Friday, March 15:
vs. Virginia Military Institute (@Riverside, Calif.) L 3-16 | stats | box score
vs. Redlands (@Redlands, Calif.) L 4-19 | stats |
   * Division I VMI led 7-2 at the halftime break and cruised to a 13-goal win.  Anya Phillips posted 10 saves for the Scots, while Chloe Kaulas, Suzanne Oh and Rachel Harrington-Abrams netted one goal apiece.  Against Division III stronghold and No.4-ranked Redlands, Mac received two goals from Sarah Shoemaker and nine saves from Phillips.

Saturday, March 16:
vs. La Verne (@Riverside, Calif.) L 9-13 | stats
vs. Iona (@Redlands, Calif.) L 4-16 | stats
    * The Scots played very well against a highly-ranked La Verne team and netted a season-high nine goals.  Zexin Nai led the way with four goals and Sarah Shoemaker pumped in three.  Anya Phillips resistered nine saves.  Mac took on its second Division I opponents in the second game of the day and fell to the Iona Gaels.  Chloe Kaulas tallied two of her team's four goals.

Sunday, March 17:
vs. Whittier (@Whittier, Calif.) L 3-11 | stats
vs. La Verne (@Whittier, Calif.) L 5-13 | stats
    * Sarah Shoemaker scored twice and and Chloe Kaulas accounted for one goal in Macalester's loss to Whittier.    Kaulas netted three goals and Anya Phillips turned away nine shots on goal against La Verne.

Tuesday, March 19:
vs. Chapman (@Orange, Calif.) L 6-21 | stats
    * Chapman led 10-2 at halftime.  Sarah Shoemaker netted three goals - all in the third quarter - and Chloe Kaulas scored twice for the Scots.

Wednesday, March 20:
vs. Cal State-San Bernardino (@San Bernardino, Calif.) L 6-18 | stats
    * Anya Phillips turned aside 10 shots on goal to lead the Macalester defensive effort.  Chloe Kaulas scored three time and Sarah Shoemaker added two goals.
