Scots take nightcap to gain split with Concordia

Macalester came back from a heart-breaking nine-inning defeat in the opener to gain a split Saturday at home with Concordia-Moorhead, taking the nightcap 4-0 on a five-hit shutout by Amanda Knopf (Jr., Boulder, Colo.). The Scots gain their first MIAC victory of the season.

The day started off with the hitters in control as each team tallied three runs on three hits in the opening innings of the opener. Cleo Nagy (Fy., Eugene, Ore. / Henry D. Sheldon) drove in Mac's first run with an single and Hayley Reeves (Sr., Oberlin, Ohio) doubled in two more later in the inning.

Macalester went up 4-3 in the third on a Katie Fuller (Fy., Boulder, Colo.) home run, her second of the year. The Cobbers, however, took over the lead with a three-run fifth inning before the Scots forced extra innings with solo runs in the sixth and seventh. Allie Dautrich (Fy., Mansfield Center, Conn. / E.O. Smith) doubled in the sixth and came around to score on a Rebecca McCrory (Fy., Seattle, Wash. / University Prep) hit. In the seventh, Nagy belted a homer to center field to deadlock the game at 6-6.

Concordia, however, came up with its third three-run frame of the game in the ninth to take the victory.

Knopf kept Concordia off the scoreboard, striking out eight without walking a batter. The Scots plated single runs in the third and fourth innings and doubled their lead in the sixth on a two-run double by Reeves to deep left field. Reeves and Nagy each had two hits on the game and on the day Nagy had four hits.

The Scots host Hamline on Tuesday (April 26) at 5 p.m.
